Line 1: Line 1:
+The obstruction of the pulmonary [[artery]] or a branch of it leading to the [[lung]]s by a [[blood clot]], usually from the leg, or foreign material causing sudden closure of the vessel. (Embolus is from the Greek "embolos" meaning plug.)

+The risk factors for pulmonary embolism include advanced age, [[cancer]], [[genetic]] predisposition, immobilization (especially in the hospital), pelvic or leg [[trauma]], pregnancy, and [[surgery]].
 +
+The diagnosis of pulmonary embolism can be difficult because the symptoms are nonspecific and may mimic many other [[disease]]s. Pulmonary angiography is the gold standard test. Other tests may include oximetry and arterial blood gas analysis and imaging such as chest [[x-ray]]s and ultrasonography.
 +
+The treatment includes anticoagulants such as heparin and warfarin (Coumadin). About 10 - 15% of patients with pulmonary embolism die.
 +
+Common Misspellings: pulmanary embolism, pulmenary embolism
 +
+(2) The lodgment of a blood clot in the lumen of a pulmonary artery, causing a severe dysfunction in respiratory function.
 +
+Pulmonary emboli often have origin in the [[vein]]s of the lower extremities where clots form in the deep leg veins and then travel to the [[lung]]s via the venous circulation.
 +
+Symptoms and features include acute onset of shortness of breath ([[Dyspnea]]), chest pain (worse with breathing) and rapid heart rate and respiratory rate. Some individuals may have haemoptysis.
 +
+Diagnosis can be made on a ventilation perfusion scan of the lung or on a pulmonary angiogram.
