 +(1) A surgical procedure in which the [[:lymph nodes]] are removed and examined to see whether they contain [[cancer]]. For a regional lymphadenectomy,​ some of the lymph nodes in the [[tumor]] area are removed; for a radical lymphadenectomy,​ most or all of the lymph nodes in the tumor area are removed. Also called lymph node dissection.
  
 +(2) Lymphadenectomy,​ also called lymph node dissection, is a surgical procedure in which lymph glands are removed from the body and examined for the presence of cancerous cells. A limited or modified lymphadenectomy removes only some of the lymph nodes in the area around a tumor; a total or radical lymphadenectomy removes all of the lymph nodes in the area.
